LODGING EDGE » CHECKING
IN AND OUT
The subject of late check
outs and early arrivals seems to come up a lot, so we thought we
would put together this page so more people could better
understand why lodging properties take the stands they take.
Your lodging hosts appreciate
your business and work diligently to make your stay as pleasant as
possible. This means they must coordinate their schedules so that
arrivals and departures can be managed with minimal disruption.
Lodging establishments have set specific times for check-in and
check-out to allow enough time for housekeeping and preparation
between guests. If you ask your lodging hosts for an early
check-in or late check out, it often puts too much pressure on
their booked schedules, and could compromise the quality of the
cleaning and housekeeping...something your hosts prefer not to do.
Or worse, they may have difficulty keeping up and may not have
your room or cottage ready for you on time, which is an
inconvenience for the guest, and an embarrassment for your lodging
hosts.
This can be further compounded by
outgoing guests who want to check out late, and incoming guests
wanting to check in early for the same room. Some lodging
establishments have resorted to adding a surcharge to the guest
bill for early check-ins or late check-outs. Many places
simply do not allow it. However, these rules are often not
as strictly enforced during the off season.
Lastly, upon checking out, make a
point of doing a final sweep of your room or vacation cottage
before you leave. Make sure you have not left children's toys
stuffed between the sofa cushions, earrings on the nightstand, or
favorite clothing items in the dresser drawer. Many establishments
are very clear about not being responsible for items left behind,
and it may be difficult to try to recover these items later.
