SLED DOG RACES
This Years Dates of the 81st Annual
Sled Dog Derby
There are four races
- The Unlimited Race is
about 16 miles long.
- The Six Dog Race is about
6 miles long.
- The Three Dog Junior Race
is about 6 miles long.
- The One Dog Race is about
6 miles long.
Snow Conditions as of January 26, 2010
While some winters have
suffered from mild weather and practically snowless conditions,
recent winters have had good conditions. This year, it appears
mother nature is going to be tricky. Over 40 inches of snow has fallen this
winter, but yesterdays (1/25) heavy rains and warm temps have really melted a
lot. With temps turning colder and with over two weeks to go, there is
plenty of time for more snow to fall and for conditions to improve.
About the Event
Each year in the heart of a New
England winter, Laconia hosts the World Championship Sled Dog
Derby. Held in early or mid February, this world class ISDRA
sanctioned event competes race teams for three days on a rigorous
sixteen mile course over the lakes and into the woods.
Dubbed as the
greatest show on snow, the sled dog derby makes for a different,
entertaining and exciting way to spend an afternoon with the
family. Come join in on the fun! The event is assembled by the
Lakes Region Sled Dog Club and couldn't take place without the
support of the city of Laconia and local businesses.
Prizes
In this intense race for best
time, the dedicated dogs can pull at speeds of over fifteen miles
per hour. The teams are competing for trophies and of course
some nice cash prizes. The lucky race team that comes in with the
best time for all of the three days of racing is awarded the
coveted Championship Sled Dog Derby Trophy and a hefty cash purse.
