In
short, the Lakes Region sports a short but muggy summer, some
really stunning fall foliage in autumn, ridiculously long
and snowy winters, and highly variable wet springs. The four
seasons in the Lakes Region offer four unique versions of the
Lakes Region for visitors to enjoy. So that you can be best
prepared and pack accordingly, here is what you can expect, month
by month.
JANUARY
|
| Average
Low: |
7º |
This
month is the heart of winter, and it seldom disappoints.
Bitter cold outbreaks and heavy snows are common in
January. The typical January thaw is a welcome relief
around the third week of January, but it may not occur in
some years. This month is when Lake Winnipesaukee
usually freezes over. |

FEBRUARY
|
| Average
Low: |
10º |
Although
this month is ever so slightly warmer than January, a
decline in winter like weather is out of the question. Some
of the Lakes Regions biggest snowstorms have occurred in
this month, and the snow can occasionally take on the
unwanted characteristic of being heavy and wet. |

MARCH
|
| Average
Low: |

The
days are getting longer as the sun rises higher, and this
leads to a slow warming. The weather is becoming less frigid
but it still doesn't mean winter is over. Occasional heavy
snows may fall at any time during March, and some of the
heaviest snowfalls of all time have fallen in the first week
of the month. |

feel of spring is in the air as the air continues to warm
and buds on the trees begin to swell. April presents
weather that is widely variable. Heavy snows are rare but
have happened, usually it doesn't stick for long.
Early heat waves occasionally occur, giving
a sample of the summer weather which is not too far off. |

MAY
|
| Average
Low: |

May marks the end of wintry
weather and the start to the sultry. Although the
nights can still be chilly, the days are warm and by mid to
late may, you can plant your tender annuals and vegetables
without fear of frost. Soaking rains fully bring out
the buds on the trees and by the end of the month, the state
is green once again.

JULY
|
| Average
Low: |

July brings with it classic
summer weather. Expect it to be hazy, hot, and humid much of
the time. If we are going to get into the nineties, chances
are it will occur in July. Some years it may not rain for
weeks, other years it may rain every other day. On average,
it usually leans toward the drier. There are very few all
day rain outs, mostly just rain associated with afternoon
and evening thunderstorms.

The first two weeks of
August are pretty much the same as the last two weeks of
July, expect continued hot and humid weather. Come the
last two weeks things will begin to cool down. Late
August may reveal some early fall foliage from old or weaker
trees as nights cool and days shorten. The Mt.
Washington Observatory sees it's first touch of snow late in
the month.

September
is a month of change, the first week is typically mild and
pleasant, often the last gasp of summer weather. Come the
second week, things start to get chilly. By the third
week, the first frost may spread into the Lakes Region and
southward. At the end of September, northern parts of
the state start to explode into color as the foliage season
begins. |

NOVEMBER
|
| Average
Low: |

With
no leaves on the trees, usually no snow on the ground, and
no hope for warm weather until next May, November is noted
for being the most drab and depressing month of the
year. Chilly and often wet, early season nor-easters
may bring gusty winds and rain. The days are getting
shorter and winter is coming on fast. |
