In short, the Lakes Region sports a short but muggy summer, some really stunning fall foliage in autumn, ridiculously long and  snowy winters, and highly variable wet springs. The four seasons in the Lakes Region offer four unique versions of the Lakes Region for visitors to enjoy. So that you can be best prepared and pack accordingly, here is what you can expect, month by month.

 
JANUARY

Average Low: This month is the heart of winter, and it seldom disappoints. Bitter cold outbreaks and heavy snows are common in January.  The typical January thaw is a welcome relief around the third week of January, but it may not occur in some years.  This month is when Lake Winnipesaukee usually freezes over.

FEBRUARY
Average Low: 10º Although this month is ever so slightly warmer than January, a decline in winter like weather is out of the question. Some of the Lakes Regions biggest snowstorms have occurred in this month, and the snow can occasionally take on the unwanted characteristic of being heavy and wet.

MARCH
Average Low: 21º The days are getting longer as the sun rises higher, and this leads to a slow warming. The weather is becoming less frigid but it still doesn't mean winter is over. Occasional heavy snows may fall at any time during March, and some of the heaviest snowfalls of all time have fallen in the first week of the month.

APRIL
Average Low: 29º The feel of spring is in the air as the air continues to warm and buds on the trees begin to swell.  April presents weather that is widely variable. Heavy snows are rare but have happened, usually it doesn't stick for long.  Early heat waves occasionally occur, giving a sample of the summer weather which is not too far off.

MAY
Average Low: 40º

May marks the end of wintry weather and the start to the sultry.  Although the nights can still be chilly, the days are warm and by mid to late may, you can plant your tender annuals and vegetables without fear of frost.  Soaking rains fully bring out the buds on the trees and by the end of the month, the state is green once again.

JUNE
Average Low: 53º

Wild temperature swings can occur in the monthe of June.  Highs can be as cool as in the fifties or they can spike up and bring a mini heat wave in the form of nineties.  The first of the summer thunderstorms may being to crop up and possible prolonged rainy spells may develop.

JULY
Average Low: 60º

July brings with it classic summer weather. Expect it to be hazy, hot, and humid much of the time. If we are going to get into the nineties, chances are it will occur in July. Some years it may not rain for weeks, other years it may rain every other day. On average, it usually leans toward the drier. There are very few all day rain outs, mostly just rain associated with afternoon and evening thunderstorms.

AUGUST
Average Low: 55º

The first two weeks of August are pretty much the same as the last two weeks of July, expect continued hot and humid weather.  Come the last two weeks things will begin to cool down.  Late August may reveal some early fall foliage from old or weaker trees as nights cool and days shorten.  The Mt. Washington Observatory sees it's first touch of snow late in the month.

SEPTEMBER
Average Low: 49º September is a month of change, the first week is typically mild and pleasant, often the last gasp of summer weather. Come the second week, things start to get chilly.  By the third week, the first frost may spread into the Lakes Region and southward. At the end of September, northern parts of the state start to explode into color as the foliage season begins.

OCTOBER
Average Low: 35º The first two weeks of October are all about the fall foliage, from there, it's all downhill all the way into winter.  Nights start to dip into the 20's more and more often, and the first killing frost has reached even the coastline. Parts of northern New Hampshire and in the mountains may see some early season snowfall.

NOVEMBER
Average Low: 21º With no leaves on the trees, usually no snow on the ground, and no hope for warm weather until next May, November is noted for being the most drab and depressing month of the year.  Chilly and often wet, early season nor-easters may bring gusty winds and rain.  The days are getting shorter and winter is coming on fast.

DECEMBER
Average Low: 11º The days are short and the nights are long, the sun remains low on the horizon for the better part of the day.  The odds of snow are getting better with each day.  December introduces the first real blast of winter and provides a preview of the winter months that remain ahead.
