HOME » PHOTOS » WILDLIFE You Are Here

Wildlife is in plentiful supply in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. Moose are most often spotted in late spring and early. Deer are commonly spotted most often in the fall.  Other, sometimes less beloved wildlife, such as raccoons and skunks, make themselves known throughout the year.  In case you didn't spot anything when driving around here, here are some photos of living things in the Lakes Region, other than people.  Click on the photos to enlarge.

moose.jpg (80932 bytes) Two moose seen in late may.  The moose population is growing fast around here, watch out!
P9064139.jpg (13926 bytes) This is an eagle flying incredibly high over the Weirs Channel during September of 2003.
Pa094319.jpg (43683 bytes) Two large dinners, quickly scurrying across the road coming down from Castle Springs.
P9014038.jpg (48500 bytes) Often mistaken for loons, these are Mergansers.  You can tell easily by the snobbish appearance of their upturned heads.
P5183426.jpg (42533 bytes) A ruffed grouse pauses to fail it's tail for me.
Chipmun.jpg (66917 bytes) This chipmunk has found quite home between these two rocks.
strangebirdfront.jpg (52362 bytes) A northern flicker, the only ground feeding woodpecker browses my backyard.
RedFox.jpg (25455 bytes) A red fox browses the shoreline, looking for a snack.
robin.jpg (78391 bytes) The first sign of spring came late this year.  This robin sits on a birch log in late May.
Skunk.jpg (55652 bytes) There is quite a story behind where this skunk came from. Hopefully I'll put it online someday.
wavingloon.jpg (34287 bytes) Loon get cramps too! Pictured here is a loon doing the ever comical leg waggle.  And to think I thought he was just being friendly and waving.
P5193517.jpg (43920 bytes) The front bands on this Killdeer are quite attractive.
P5193512.JPG (44013 bytes) A Canadian goose swims around the tip of a peninsula.
P2032294.JPG (38785 bytes) Not everyone's favorite bird, but their fearlessness and easy to photograph nature makes them easy prey.
loon.jpg (34132 bytes) A loon drifts quietly on the lake, resting before resuming its relentless search for fish.
chickadeeonfeeder.jpg (37848 bytes) A wet black capped chickadee enjoys a dinner from the suet cake on my back deck.
ButterflyonPinkFlo.jpg (65328 bytes) A tiger swallowtail enjoys a sip of nectar from a flower who's name escapes me at the moment.

P5203545.jpg (51098 bytes) A loon drifts the day away in a cove, sheltered from the waves of the big open areas of the lake.
Birdsnest.jpg (29393 bytes) I don't have any idea what kind of birds these are, but there mother is terrible. She fled the scene whenever I got within 200 feet.
Frog.jpg (62193 bytes) Imagine having this guy sitting next to your paper on your doorstep in the morning.  It was a surprize.
Hummingbi.jpg (55466 bytes) A female ruby throated hummingbird haves a shot at some red monarda.
Chickadee.jpg (39723 bytes) A black capped chickadee sits on a branch with a beak full of nest building supplies.
mothonconeflower.jpg (43761 bytes) A common white butterfly tries to extract some nectar from the prickly center of a Pink Coneflower.
P5183381.jpg (46986 bytes) Some sort of wood duck I presume.  I just call it the duck with the 'fro.
redsquirrelontree.jpg (37251 bytes) A red squirrel plots the best method for attaching a nearby bird feeder.
cat.jpg (59277 bytes) A Lake Region non-wild cat. Pictured here in her wheelchair about a month before her 17 year life came to an end.
P6183755.jpg (36824 bytes) The public docks remain a site of activity even after the summer busy season comes to and end.
P6113653.JPG (41472 bytes) A chipmunk takes a rest on a tree stump and eyes me as I move in for the picture.
Butterfly.jpg (49160 bytes) A tiger swallowtail enjoys a sip of nectar from a verbena plant.
